Tomorrow we will be wearing PINK. It's an anti-bullying day, started by a group of students who wore pink to stand up to the bullies who teased a Grade 9 boy for wearing a pink t-shirt to school. If you don't have a pink t-shirt, be creative!
Library Days are currently on Thursdays.
Scholastic book orders are due on Tuesday, April 17th.
Friday, April 27th is a PD Day (no school that day).
Letters and Reading Skills:
We have completed our third group of letters (based on how the lower case letters are formed. If your child is a Year 2 student, it would be helpful if you could review these letters at home to see if your child can name the letters and their sounds:
vowels: a, e, i, o, u
letters with downward lines: l, t, i, j, f
letters that go down and "boing" back up (like a ball): r, n, m, h, b, p
We are now beginning the letters that begin with the "magic c": c, o, a, d, g, q, s
Some students are working on combining the consonants and vowels to read syllables (la, ta, ma, sa... or la, le, li, lo...). If your child knows all their letter sounds, you could practice reading syllables. For an added challenge, some students are ready to read syllables starting with consonant blends (bra, gla, tra...).
We will be sending home a booklet that contains the songs we've learned for the various letter sounds. So far, we have learned the songs for the first 3 groups of letters.
Some of things we have been talking/learning about include:
- our bodies and healthy eating
- diversity, including our similarities and differences, and what makes us unique
- sports that people play in wheelchairs and trying out our own versions of scooter board basketball and hockey
- strategies we can use when we're not in the "green zone" (e.g., feeling tired, frustrated, too excited, etc.)
Last week each group made a scavenger hunt outdoors for the other group to follow. It was lots of fun!
Recently, we've been busy building a contraption at our water table. It's been amazing watching the exploration and the discoveries (e.g. Will the water go UP a tube? Why? How?).
