MARK YOUR CALENDARS: NEW PD DAY ON APRIL 25
A new PD Day has been added to the 2015/2016 School Year. It's on MONDAY, April 25th. There will be no school that day. Our class will be celebrating Family Literacy Day this Friday, January 29th (the other kindergarten classes will celebrate on Wednesday, which is the "official" Family Literacy Day). We will be reading stories with our Grade 3 Learning Buddies, and doing some special Literacy activities. Students are encouraged to wear their pyjamas on Friday. They may also choose to bring a favourite stuffed animal and/or book to enjoy at school. Please make sure your child's name is in her/his book! We are looking for some parents or grandparents to come read a story or poem to the class (in French or English). If you are available, please let us know what time works best for you. Options include: 9:10-9:25, 10:25-10:40 (first nutrition break), 12:50-1:05 (second nutrition break), 1:50-2:05 or 3:00-3:10. We're looking forward to enjoying some great stories together! Or you could go for a short walk as a family! Our class will be going for a walk at 11:15. Please let us know if you're interested in joining us on this adventure. Merci. Tomorrow night there's a movie night at John McCrae Public School.
Doors open at 5:30 and "Escape From Planet Earth" will begin at 6:00. Food needed to be pre-ordered, but even if you didn't order food you're still welcome to attend. You may bring your own food if you'd like. This is a FREE event (suggested donation of $5 / family). http://pic.twitter.com/m2vOxcbzk Some students took on the challenge of trying to figure out how to make a square with 2 long pieces of wood. There were some interesting suggestions, but they figured out they needed more pieces. - We need to buy more wood. - You need to cut down a tree and make it into another piece like this. Then we talked about cutting the pieces we had to make 4 pieces. - We can't use scissors, they're too small. - We would need really big scissors. - Scissors aren't sharp enough. Eventually they concluded we'd need a saw and that we'd need to cut the wood in half. We measured the wood and learned that it was 8 feet long. When asked how we could figure out what would be half of 8, one student replied - Well, 4+4 is 8. That's how we decided to measure 4 feet. We double checked our measurements, sawed the wood, and then got to work sanding it! Our building projects haven't been limited to wood and blocks. This week we got outside and took advantage of the beautiful weather and packing snow!
Happy New Year! We hope you had a great holiday with your families. "Bienvenue" to Alexis who has joined our class! Because we have a new student, we will be sending home an updated Friendship List. Please let me know if there are any changes or corrections that need to be made to the original list (I have already made the changes that were already brought to my attention).
The children have done a great job getting back into the routines at school. However, we are finding that the class is VERY loud. We've been reminding the students to use quieter voices when working and playing with their friends. As well, we're trying to work with groups in the hallway to reduce the number of students in the class and next week, we will split the class in half for some of the time, and have half the children outside and half inside. All of these strategies should help, but we'd appreciate your help at home. Please point out to your child if she/he is speaking in a loud voice. Thanks! As well, please encourage your child to dress herself/himself when going outside. The more independent the children can be with their boots, mitts, hats and zippers, the easier it is for us to get all 28 of them outside! Please refer to the CALENDAR tab for important dates.
