The students had a great time being entomologists during our Scientist in the School presentation. We observed various critters, and tried to find out which were insects by counting their legs (insects have 6 legs). As well, we explored insect body parts, camouflage and symmetry, and observed how insects meet their needs. It was a fun morning with lots of hands-on learning!

Just a reminder that...
This Thursday, June 2nd is our Family Fun Night from 5:30-8:00. Everyone is welcome (even if you didn't pre-order food). Friday, June 3rd is a PD Day. There is no school on Friday! Scholastic Book Orders are due on Tuesday, June 7th. Our class trip is on Monday, June 13th to Greenway Blooming Centre. Please return permission slips and payments as soon as possible. These will be sent home June 1. Our year-end presentation and picnic will take place on Thursday, June 16th. Our students have been busy preparing a play for you. Here's the schedule for that day: 11:30 Arrival 11:40 Presentation of play (Mme Johnson, Mme Noftall and Mme Horack's class) Presentation of songs (Mme Farquhar and Mme Smith's class) 12:15 Picnic outside (or in gym if raining). Please bring a picnic blanket and food to share (we will let you know if we'd like you to bring sweet or savory food). 1:15 Goodbye and Recess Hope to see you at the Family Fun Night and/or the year-end picnic! This Friday will be a busy day since we'll be learning about bugs all morning during our Scientists in the School presentation and attending the Primary Talent Show (grade 1-3) at the end of the day. However, in the midst of all of that, it is also Super Hero Day! The children can dress up as Super Heroes or wear clothing featuring their heroes. It's not a problem if they don't have anything special to wear (there will be enough going on without special outfits!).
Just a few reminders (there's so much happening right now!): - If you collected pledges but have not yet returned the Jump Rope for Heart envelope, please do so as soon as possible! - Our class is collecting "Active Outdoor" items for our gift basket for the School Council Fundraiser. If possible, please send in an item such as a skipping rope, ball, frisbee, etc, by Friday, May 20th to help with this fundraiser. We're spending more and more time outside. Please send your child with a sunhat, sunscreen and water bottle. All the fresh air and activity has been making the students quite tired. We've been noticing that a number of students are having a hard time listening and following instructions. We've been reminding them of our expectations and we'll try to provide more quiet time for those who need the rest. If you can try to ensure they're well rested at home, that would be great! Today, we saw the Grade 6-8 Drama Club's Presentation of the play "Gran's Guide to Stop an Ogre". It was a fabulous play with a great message about standing up and speaking assertively when you want to stop a "bully". We talked in class about saying "Stop. I feel (sad/hurt/angry) when you (push me, call me "____", etc.)" or "Arrete, je n'aime pas quand tu me pousses.". We continue to be amazed at all the French the students are understanding and speaking! "C'est fantastique!" This Friday morning we're having a Scientists in the School program called "Backyard Bugs".
“Bee” an entomologist! Meet the insect family and discover their unique anatomy. Develop a new appreciation of bugs by investigating how bugs behave, eat, see and smell. Help a butterfly play hide and seek using camouflage. See the world through the eyes of a dragonfly. Identify interesting backyard bugs and make an insect to take home.” We need 3 adult volunteers to assist with the centres for this programme. If you are able to help out with this hands-on presentation, please let us know as soon as possible. When? Friday May 20th 8:40 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Bonne Fête à tout le monde was today's spirit day and it was chosen by our class!
The students were VERY excited to celebrate everyone's birthday as a class. Students baked cupcakes in the morning which were quickly devoured during second nutrition break. Thank you to our volunteers who helped out this morning! In the afternoon, students made playdough cupcakes, served up ice cream cones and sundaes at our ice cream shop, played bean bag toss and were challenged with cup stacking. We ended our day with a traditional birthday party game of pass the parcel containing a classroom gift of Canadian woodland stuffed animal friends! And, could there be any better way to end the party than with a loot bag? One student summed up our day as "the best day ever!" Bonne Fête! Mme Horack Book orders for the month of May are due by Monday, May 16th.
We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all our amazing volunteers. As you are all well aware, we have a very busy classroom and it makes a huge difference to have an extra set of hands.
We hope you can join us at the volunteer breakfast from 7:45-8:30 tomorrow morning in the library. Childcare will be available. I hope you had a nice Mother's Day Weekend.
There's lots going on at John McCrae, so I thought I'd give you the run down on some coming events! Scholastic Book Orders are due this Friday, May 13th. When you order an item, we collect points which we use to buy books and other resources for the classroom. This spring, we're having special Theme Days on Fridays. The themes were suggested by the classes and this Friday's theme was suggested by our class! It's a school wide birthday celebration: "Bonne fête à toute l'école!". We'll make party hats and a cake in class. We'll keep you posted on the coming themes! Gift Baskets will be raffled off at the Year-End Family Fun Night on Thursday, June 2nd. Please send in an "Active Outdoor Fun" item for our class' basket. Some ideas include: skipping ropes, balls, frisbees, sunscreen, bubbles, etc. Be creative. You could also send in a cash donation (please indicate it's for the gift basket) and I could purchase something with your donations. Please send in your contribution by Friday, May 20th. We appreciate your support of this School Council Fundraiser. Jump Rope for Heart is this Wednesday, May 11th. If you collected donations for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, please return the pledge envelope by this Wednesday. The Kindergarten students will be participating in various activities from 9:00-9:40. you're welcome to join us if you'd like. It would be helpful if each child came to school with a water bottle. If anyone has a skipping rope, they're welcome to bring that as well. Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers who assisted with last Thursday's art workshop. The children rotated through 6 centres and produced at least 4 works of art with the assistance of 11 adults (including local artist Clive Lewis and Madelle George who came back to volunteer for the day). If you have not yet sent in the $5 to cover the expenses of this special activity, please do so as soon as possible. A special thank you to Madame Farquhar who was instrumental in the planning of this fantastic event. During the workshop we experimented with a variety of techniques.
