Les pompiers (fire fighters):
As you likely know, our class was having so much fun pretending to be fire fighters in our dramatic centre, that as a class we decided to build a fire truck! Our construction began by building a rectangular frame. The Year 1 students were very eager to help out, and the Year 2 students were excited to be able to teach the new students how to use the tools! Once the 2 rectangles were built, we quickly discovered that these would not maintain their rectangular shape, so the students brainstormed ideas and we decided to add triangles (the initial ideas was to make them out of tape, but then we decided to try wood). This idea worked and then we attached the 2 rectangles together (on above the other) but discovered that the "truck" was too high for some children to step into. We made some modifications, and have now covered the "walls" of the truck. It's still a work in project, but the children are loving playing with the hoses and pylons, as well as the equipment at the "station" (computer keyboards, phones, clipboards, etc.).
We were lucky enough to have a visit from fire fighter Marjorie, whose children attend our school (this photo shows her visiting another McCrae class). It takes 60 days to book a trip to the fire station, but when they heard this is a current interest in our classroom, the fire station agreed to have us come on Tuesday, December 5th! We will be walking there with pit stops along the way to break up the trip! We'll be looking for a few volunteers to join us that morning (likely 9-11:30 or 12).
