We had a fabulous trip to the fire station! Thank you so much to the fire fighters for their excellent presentation! We were really proud of how well the students did both walking to the station and listening while we were there! We saw many interesting things including an aerial platform being raised and lowered. The fire fighters can spray 1400 liters of water per minute from the their aerial platform! We asked the students to tell us about what they learned. Here are some of the things they said...
This bucket goes up really, really high in the air. It has a "propellor" on it to see how fast the wind is blowing. If the wind blows too fast, the fire fighters can't go up. Did you know that the fire chief's helmet is white? The captains' helmets are red, and the fire fighters' helmets are black. We saw a fire boat and the chief's car (with his computer in it). The chief's computer shows where all the fire trucks, buildings, and hydrants are located in Guelph. We also saw the yellow tanker truck that holds the water. They fill it up from lakes, rivers, streams or even swimming pools! | A bucket and ladder fold down right down to the truck! This truck can also lift up 8 feet in the air on stabilizers! It was like a transformer. Voici un pompier. We got to see the fire fighter in all his gear. He sounded like Darth Vader. |
